Don’t know what to ask or where to start? Afraid you’ll end up with terrible and blurry pictures? I got you girl! Here is a list of my 22 questions you should ask your wedding photographer. This will help you get started and find a photographer who will be prepared and professional on your big day, so you can be stress-free and enjoy the day! First, here are three pointers before you meet with them.
Check out their social media.
Usually you can see their style and if they have experience by checking out their instagram and facebook. You may even be able to tell if they shoot more candid style or posed. you can usually get a feel for their personality as well.
Check out their website if they have one.
Do they have a blog? Many times they have very helpful tips there. Some have their pricing or packages on their site. See what services they offer. This can already give you a feel for the photographer and their style.
Get their pricing.
You should definitely do this so that you know they are in your price range. You definitely don’t want to add to your stress and meet with someone who is not even in your price range.
Now that you’ve done that, here are some 22 not so obvious questions you should ask your wedding photographer.
Do you have a plan if it rains? What will you do if it does rain?
Many photographers (not all) have clear umbrellas and should also have something to cover their camera and equipment. Hopefully they have a plan for if it rains!
What happens if an emergency comes up?
Do they have an associate photographer who can take their place if something happens? Will they just cancel on you? Will they help you find someone else?
What other services do they offer?
If you are interested in having a bridal session, boudoir session or trash the dress session, this is definitely something to ask your photographer about. Do you want the rehearsal photographed?
Do you shoot with a second photographer or does my package just come with one?
Every photographer is different. Some include a second photographer in their package, some make it optional and some are used to shooting alone. If they use a second photographer, it usually means more pictures! definitely ask about this one!
Will you give me a timeline?
this is SO important! Believe me, you want your photographer to work with you on your timeline! They know when the best times are to get beautiful pictures! Many are happy to send you customized timelines!
Do you have a list of preferred vendors?
This is awesome if you havent chosen your venue or your other vendors! Your photographer may have a list of vendors they have worked with and are awesome!
What is your cancellation policy?
What happens if you cancel? And if they cancel? Will the deposit be returned?
What happens if you get another inquiry for my wedding date?
What does the photographer require for you to book that date? Does the photographer keep that date just for you or do they allow others to outbid you? Such an important question to ask so you don’t have any surprises!
Are you available on my date?
This is always one you should ask pretty early in the meeting. If they are booked for your date, then you have two options. You can change your date (if you really love this photographer) or you’ll have to find another. Many times they can refer you to someone with a similar style!
Have you been to my venue before or will you go to my venue ahead of time if possible?
As a photographer, I prefer to visit the venue ahead of time if possible. This gives me a chance to walk around and see where are the best places for pictures.
Can I see a full gallery?
Many times a photographer has a full gallery somewhere digitally that they can show you. Here you will probably see getting ready pictures, details, the ceremony, group pictures and reception pictures.
Do you blend into the background or are you more active and visible during the ceremony and reception?
Where will they be during the ceremony? Are they going to be standing next to the person officiating the wedding or will the be in the background, blending in? This is SO important to ask! You probably don’t want them hovering over you while you are saying your vows. In my opinion, this is one of the most important questions you should ask your wedding photographer.
What packages do you have? Do you have any add-ons?
Hopefully you have already gotten this info before your meeting so as not to waste time, but if you haven’t gotten it yet, now’s the time!
Do you offer extra retouching? Are the pictures edited?
Hopefully by now, you know your photographer’s style, and you won’t need any extra retouching. If you do, your photographer may charge extra.
Do you have insurance?
Many photographers have insurance or they can get “day of” insurance. This is sooo important! You would not want anyone to get hurt or to get charged for any damage to equipment.
Do you have travel fees for my wedding day?
If your photographer has to travel at all to your wedding, ask them about their travel fees. Many charge if they have to travel 30 minutes or more to your venue.
Do you offer prints or albums?
See if they will be offering you any specially designed albums or prints. Many times they may order from a special lab and have great quality of pictures!
When and how will we receive the pictures?
Make sure that you know what your photographer’s turn around time is. Many times it is betwen 1-3 months. It takes a LOT of time to edit all of those pictures, but they may give you a sneak peek!
Will you be posting our pictures online or submitting them in publications?
If you are a super private person and don’t want other to see your pictures, make sure that you ask your photographer this question. If you don’t mind, let them know! I’m sure they will appreciate your willingness to let them use your pictures for marketing! You may really enjoy seeing them published! See my latest published gallery here!
How and when can we book?
Does your photographer send contracts online? Invoices? How can you book your date?
Do you have a list of pictures you will be taking? A shot list?
No need to make a list of pictures you’d like if you’re photographer has it covered. If you have one or two, you can request it, but don’t give them a whole list of shots you want. They should already have a list.
Do you have any meal requirements?
Your photographer may not be one of your guests exactly, but they will need to eat. If they have an assistant or second shooter, you will need to make sure you have them on your list for your caterer as well. Check and see if they have any allergies or are vegan…
